Case Study: Shading and Lighting
In this project, we were required to choose a space to analyse on shading and lighting. We have to do a thorough research on the passive design strategies, the principles and details needed for these passive design strategies to perform best in tropical climate and to achieve thermal comfort in this space. Using apps on our smartphones for measuring and collecting data, we have to identify issues if there is and propose a passive solution.

Through this project I have acquired the basic understanding of passive building design strategies used to achieve comfort level. This is important as it uses little to no energy and less cost to counter climate change. I have also learned how to use some apps on my smartphone to measure and collect data about a space through analysing the chosen space. According to MS1525, the U-value of the roof was above the recommended limit causing the space to be out of the comfort zone as shown through the psychrometric chart. To counter this, we have suggested solutions such as adding insulation material to the roof as well as adding a wind turbine. We have also suggested to change the windows to casement window to improve ventilation in the space to improve overall comfort levels in the space.
